The Second IPSI Global Conference, consisting of the Assembly and Public Forum was held at the facilities of the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) in Nairobi, Kenya during 13-14 March 2012.

Outline and result of discussions

[13 March: The Second IPSI Assembly]

The IPSI Assembly was held on the morning of 13 March and was attended by representatives of 58 member organizations. Dr. Tony Simons, Director General of the World Agroforestry Centre, served as chair of the Assembly and guided the proceedings in an appropriate manner. During the assembly, the chair of the IPSI Steering Committee (SC), Prof. Alfred Oteng-Yeboah, presented a report on the activities of the SC since the First IPSI Global Conference in March 2011. A presentation on strategy development was also delivered by Dr. Jo Mulongoy, visiting professor at the United Nations University Institute of Advanced Studies.

The Assembly supported a proposal that IPSI-3 would be organized back-to-back with CBD COP11 in Hyderabad, India. The Secretariat reported that it has communicated with the National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) of India for hosting IPSI-3 and that it will keep the partners informed of further developments.

[13-14 March: The Public Forum]

The Public Forum was opened with remarks from Dr. Tony Simons (Director General, World Agroforestry Centre), Prof. Alfred Oteng-Yeboah (Chair of IPSI Steering Committee) and H.E. Toshihisa Takata (Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Kenya). The keynote speech was delivered by Professor Kazuhiko Takeuchi (United Nations University) and was titled “The Satoyama Initiative: The Next Step toward Societies in Harmony with Nature”.

Subsequently the Public Forum was divided into three Working Group sessions:

1) Capturing and Promoting Resilience in Socio-Ecological Production Landscapes (SEPLs) including Disaster Risk Management

2) Sharing Experiences of Restoring SEPLs

3) Revitalizing Local Communities through Enhancing Traditional Knowledge and Empowering Young Successors

During each working group session, two facilitators from within the IPSI membership moderated presentations by IPSI members and initiated discussion aimed towards developing areas for concrete action and collaboration moving forward. The output of each working group will be shared shortly and will primarily consist of (1) A summary of the session; (2) Identified needs and challenges; (3) Strategies for addressing these needs and challenges; (4) Concrete actions. In some cases, lead organizations will also be identified for shaping collaboration among IPSI members on each specific action.
