As one of the IPSI Collaborative Activities, the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), the United Nations University Institute for Advanced Studies (UNU-IAS), and the Ministry of the Environment of Japan (MOEJ) are pleased to announce an open call for proposals under the “Satoyama Development Mechanism (SDM) 2013” to facilitate further implementation of IPSI activities. The objectives of the SDM are to: (1) Promote the implementation of activities under the IPSI Strategy and Plan of Action (2) Promote the development of model practices for living in harmony with nature through sustainable use of SEPLS and contribution to the Aichi Biodiversity Targets, and (3) Provide an incentive for IPSI members to strengthen partnerships and to generate a knock-on effect from joint activities for the sustainable use of SEPLS. One or two projects will be selected under each of four project types, and will be provided with a maximum of approximately 10,000 USD for their implementation. New Member Introduction: University of Cyprus
August 2013 picture 1
From: Professor Costas M. Constantinou
The University of Cyprus constitutes a vigorous community of scholars engaged in the generation and diffusion of knowledge. The main objectives of the University are: (1) the promotion of scholarship and education through teaching and research, and (2) the enhancement of the cultural, social and economic development of Cyprus. In this context, the University believes that education must provide more than simply accumulation of knowledge and encourages the active participation of students in the process of learning as well as their acquisition of those values necessary for responsible involvement in the community. The University has researchers and research centres working extensively on themes related to the environment, production, recycling as well as on the enhancement and engagement of sustainability from various practical and theoretical angles. There are researchers that currently examine, for example, shifts in biopolitics and biodiplomacy in the context of the merging of diplomacy, defence and development; the practical implementation of engineering solutions to environmental problems; and water management and socio-economic analysis of water-related issues. The University also practices environmentalism and sustainability and aims to become a fully functioning Green campus through eco-friendly buildings and solar-power energy projects.
