Development of a manual on application of landscape approaches to National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plans (NBSAPs)

1. Background
Since 2016, UNU-IAS has been conducting collaborative research activities with the University of Tokyo Institute for Future Initiatives (UT-IFI) and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), with the support of the Ministry of the environment, Japan, to assist with the implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The activities have evolved through two phases of the project designed to help CBD Parties to apply landscape approaches to the development and implementation of NBSAPs and thereby facilitate biodiversity mainstreaming. As part of this project, a manual is being developed as a technical guide for policy administrators to apply the landscape approaches to the process of NBSAPs and other relevant strategies, policies and programmes for the post-2020 period.
2. Activities
With an aim to further promote landscape approaches and their application in development and implementation of NBSAPs under the post-2020 global biodiversity framework (GBF), UNU-IAS and IGES will conduct the following activities, using the most of knowledge and experiences the organisations have obtained through IPSI related activities:
- Augment lessons and experiences from the case examples that apply landscape approaches in developing and implementing NBSAPs;
- Update and revise the manual through collecting additional reference materials and facilitating the review processes to ensure its relevance to the post-2020 GBF; and
- Co-organise a series of expert workshops to incorporate experts’ comments and suggestions in updating and revising the manual for broad use by policy administrators, practitioners and other experts engaged in the NBSAPs processes.
3. Expected Outcomes
A manual developed through the abovementioned activities
4. Actors and Task Sharing
Planning and overall direction are developed by UNU-IAS in collaboration with IGES and SCBD. IGES will play the main role in convening the expert workshops consulting with UNU-IAS and SCBD.
5. How the activity relates to the IPSI Strategy and IPSI Plan of Action
The activity contributes to the IPSI strategic objective 1, as it will enhance the knowledge and understanding of policy administrators on SEPLS through expert workshops and a manual to be developed. In addition, the IPSI strategic objective 2 will also be achieved by promoting application of landscape approaches to the NBSAPs. The result of developing such NBSAPs will eventually contribute to the IPSI strategic objectives 3 and 4.
6. Resources, Funding
The collaborating organizations will provide resources as needed.
7. Monitoring and Reporting
The monitoring of this activity will be implemented jointly by UNU-IAS and IGES. As part of reporting, the manual will be submitted upon completion.
