In December 2022 the long-awaited “Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework” (GBF) was adopted by Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The GBF is a framework upon which Parties (national governments and the European Union) are expected to base their updated national biodiversity strategy and action plans (NBSAPs). Due to a two-year delay in adopting the framework following the COVID outbreak, most countries also delayed updating their NBSAPs. Now, many countries are rushing to complete them before the next meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP) of the CBD in October 2024. 

Three of the four goals of the GBF are reiterations of the original objectives of the CBD: the conservation of biodiversity, its sustainable use, and the equitable sharing of its benefits. For decades it has become increasingly clear that these goals/objectives can be achieved and sustained only by acknowledging and involving all stewards of the landscape. This principle is captured in the concept of “landscape approaches”, in which land and sea are managed in the context of multiples uses, and multiple users. Addressing a variety of land use and land users requires managing trade-offs between their competing goals. It is extremely challenging, but arguably essential as a means of ensuring long-term buy-in from the range of stakeholders. Landscape approaches are already explicit in some of the 23 targets within the GBF but are implicit and less obvious in many more.  

The purpose of this webinar is to present and discuss ways of managing, restoring and conserving biodiversity at the landscape level, with a focus on national biodiversity strategy and action planning. Short presentations by participants will be followed by a conversational question-and-answer session. Panelists will present tools for managing biodiversity at the landscape level and case studies on managing biodiversity at the landscape level.
