We are very pleased to announce that the Ninth Global Conference of the International Partnership for the Satoyama Initiative (IPSI-9) is currently being planned for 8 - 11 July 2023 in Akita, Japan, hosted by the Akita International University. Details of the venue and programme are still being developed, but IPSI members interested in attending are urged to take note of these dates. An official announcement with registration information will be sent out in the near future.

Grant: The LMMA Grant Scheme to Support Innovative Approaches to Scaling-up Community-based Fisheries
|
|
The LMMA Grant Scheme offers small grants of EUR 10,000 to support innovative approaches to scaling-up community-based fisheries work. Eligible applicants can apply for a small grant covering up to a twelve-month period. Funds can be used to support any activity aimed at implementing cost-effective ways to expand and/or sustain community-based fisheries management and also at increasing community representation so their voices can be better heard and taken into account by governments.

Fostering Action on the Ground: UN World Restoration Flagships
|
|
The United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030 was proclaimed to address the critical need to prevent, halt and reverse the degradation of all types of ecosystems, with FAO and UNEP as the leading agencies. The Decade launched a first call for World Restoration Flagships in January 2022 to give visibility to restoration actions on the ground that embody the ten principles for ecosystem restoration, and to inspire others to undertake or accelerate effective restoration at significant scale. The ten selected flagships were announced in December 2022 at the Fifteenth Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity. The webinar will provide an overview of the background and objectives of the call, the selection process, the ten flagships awarded in 2022, and the perspectives for future calls.

The UN 2023 Water Conference, 22-24 March, is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to unite the world around solving the water and sanitation crisis.

National governments and stakeholders from all levels of society will come together to commit to action. This Conference will launch the Water Action Agenda, which will include commitments from people around the world.

Valuing Urban Water in Asia for Achieving Sustainable Development
|
|
This session will explore water valuation for the purpose of water quality assessment, projection, and disclosure, and the need for awareness raising and green investment. It will focus on cities in developing countries in Asia where rapid urbanisation has increased the need to address water related issues, such as clean water provision, sanitation, and water-related disaster management.

Actions to Harnessing Synergies between the Paris Agreement and Sustainable Development Goals: Enhancing City to City Cooperation in the Asia-Pacific Region

This event is part of the 10th Asia-Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development (APFSD 2023) and will highlight various synergistic actions in Asia-Pacific cities. It will also showcase how such activities can contribute to sustainable net-zero transitions while ensuring a harmonious relationship with nature. Underlining that city-to-city collaboration can assist knowledge exchanges that support synergies among SDG 7, 11, 13, 15 and 17.

Harnessing Insights from Indicators-Based Resilience Assessment for Enhancing Sustainability in the Gurage Socio-Ecological Production Landscape of Ethiopia
|

Published in the Environmental Management journal and co-written by Suneetha Subramanian (Research Fellow, IPSI Secretariat), the article evaluates landscape resilience by adopting a set of indicators for enhancing sustainability in the Gurage socio-ecological production landscape in Ethiopia. The authors employed a toolkit of indicators in the production landscape through a community-based scoring approach.

Incorporating Green Energy into Smart Agriculture to Create Regional Circular and Ecological Spheres (R-CES)
|
|
With the impact of urbanization and industrialization in the 1960s and 1970s, the young population of the Zhongliao community in Chinese Taipei started to move out, the farming population gradually aged, and the labour force declined. In addition, due to the wide use of pesticides, fertilizers and herbicides, the original fertile land became a nonpoint source pollution, which caused the water quality of the Gongsitian Rivier to deteriorate. Moreover, the establishment of aquaculture farms, copper manufacturing factories and pig farms also affected air quality and generated wastewater. In 2013, the community established a platform with various government ministries and councils to maintain the community's environmental ecology and protect the residents' health.
|

The Zhongliao community applied traditional wisdom and eco-friendly farming to revitalize the production landscapes, which increased the community's income and restored the natural ecology. At the same time, modern agricultural technology was combined with green photovoltaic electricity to move towards a low-carbon living circle. The combination of smart green energy and wetland construction was adopted to optimize the water quality of streams, promote circular agriculture, demonstrate the new style of the Satoyama landscape, and shape a harmonious coexistence with nature.
