The interdependent relationship between society and nature is a defining debate of the 21st century, including in relation to climate change, sustainable development, and the Anthropocene. Globalization has brought convenience and prosperity for some, but also cross-border challenges such as natural disasters, pollution, resource depletion, and environmental degradation that impact others.
Understanding how East Asian regionalism connects societies and ecologies with implications for equity and sustainability requires collaboration across the conventional boundaries, disciplines, and sectors to coproduce new and relevant knowledge.
This symposium will examine the practices and implications of “environmental offshoring” under East Asia regionalism, including the consequences of bilateral and multilateral agreements and development policies. Attention will be paid to the issues of ecological sustainability, distributional equity, and business continuity. A member of the IPSI Secretariat, Maiko Nishi, will present An International Certification Scheme: Challenges and Opportunities for Enabling a Sustainable Supply Chain of Wild Plant Products.

1st Ifugao Rice Terraces Assessment International Summit 2022
IPSI member, Ifugao State University, will organise the first-ever summit with the theme Understanding and Envisioning the State of the Ifugao Rice Terraces Landscape. This summit will bring together researchers, policymakers, and local communities to discuss the findings of the Ifugao Rice Terraces Assessment, a project supported by the Satoyama Development Mechanism. Conservation measures and research conducted at the Ifugao Rice Terraces (IRT) will be presented with the aim to formulate a scientific vision and policy recommendations for the sustainable development of IRT. Dr. Tsunao Watanabe, Director of IPSI Secretariat, will deliver opening remarks and Research Fellow Maiko Nishi will participate in panel discussion “Responses to the Changes of the Ifugao Rice Terraces Landscape”.
🌾The Ifugao Rice Terraces (IRT) were designated by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage Site in 1995 and as Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System (GIAHS) by the Food and Agricultural Organization in 2011. The terraces play an important role in providing food security and other economic services for indigenous peoples. However, due to the loss of biodiversity, environmental destruction, reduced farm labour due to massive outmigration, the loss of interest in rice terracing among other threats IRT was placed in the List of World Heritage in Danger in 2001.
