International Satoyama Intiative

IPSI, the International Partnership for the Satoyama Initiative, promotes collaboration in the conservation and restoration of sustainable human-influenced natural environments (Socio-Ecological Production Landscapes and Seascapes: SEPLS) through broader global recognition of their value.

LEAF Co., Ltd.

LEAF is a private company and running a project Agri + Renewable. We focus to use an agriculture nature resource for a plant cultivation and harvest the power. Our goal is to make primary food Industry to become a base load energy.

Our first project is currently working with Tea farmers. Tea demand drop after the variety of drink appeared and also the bottled tea. Since then the younger generation is not interested to take over their family farm business, so it increased the abandon farmlands and becomes a society problem.

In the same event, Matcha became a huge trend in world wide, and seemed like a saver to Green tea producers. But converting the Sencha to Matcha cultivation is not easy. When tea grows new shoots, roots create Theanine and bring up to the leaf, and when photosynthesis occurs, it use Theanine to produce a Catechin. Matcha are grind tea leaves, so taking out the bitterness of Catechin are necessary, so Matcha needed the shading system.

We have design the new tea plantation with photovoltaic system. The idea was brought from the Matcha plantation in Uji, they have special shade growing farm method. This increase the tea farmers income by selling energy and price gap of Matcha and Sencha. After the study from this innovation, we found the right amount of shadings support to keep soil moisture and avoiding a frost. We also calculated the great result of carbon reduction.

Now we are improving our technology to next step. 3D sun tracking machine for more power production, using it’s computer system with sensors to collect the environment data, automation machine for shading and watering, to create the quality product above the human hand made.
