12 July 2018: CBD SBI-2 Side Event “Mainstreaming Biodiversity in Production Landscapes and Seascapes: Integrated Approaches in Design and Implementation of National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs)”

2018.07.12

The IPSI Secretariat at the United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS), with the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, the Ministry of the Environment of Japan, and the Ministry of the Environment of Estonia, held this side event during the Second meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Implementation (SBI-2) of the Convention on Biological Diversity in Montreal, Canada.

This side event focused on reporting findings of the “Research on development and implementation of National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plans (NBSAPs) toward realization of societies in harmony with nature” project conducted by UNU-IAS and the University of Tokyo Integrated Research System for Sustainability Science (UT-IR3S) in cooperation Secretariat of the CBD. A series of comprehensive background research studies were conducted to review and analyze NBSAPs in the context of integrated management approaches for landscapes and seascapes that sustain human production activities, with the objective to identify the extent to which such approaches have been included in NBSAPs. These studies included (i) the review of concepts related to integrated management approaches for production landscapes and seascapes including “cultural landscapes”, “Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS)” and “Socio Ecological Production Landscapes and Seascapes (SEPLS)” as developed under the Satoyama Initiative, and (ii) the analysis of the NBSAPs through two broad-scale and in-depth studies focusing on how these aforementioned concepts and measures are being incorporated and implemented under the NBSAPs. Following up on these background studies, an international workshop involving a number of Parties from different regions was held in Tokyo in January 2018 to gain insights and future examine the actual implementation process of such approaches under the NBSAPs. This side-event reported on the workshop findings, where speakers from Parties who participated in the Tokyo international workshop shared on their experience, with the objective to provide useful findings and recommendations for future NBSAP development and implementation of measures related to integrated approaches on production landscapes and seascapes.
